Power to the people!

While fields of PV panels may be better than burning fossil fuels (assuming that they are not consuming agricultural land), it would be even better if people in the cities and suburbs would use rooftop panels on their houses, apartments, schools, parking garages, parking lots etc.   The energy is generated close to where it is used, so there  is very little power lost in transmission.  There is also the collateral benefit (for rooftop installations) of cooling the buildings beneath the panels.  Or imagine a parking lot with PV panels shading the cars on the tarmac – the energy from the sun is used to generate electricity instead of heating up the insides of all those cars, so the occupants don’t need to run their air conditioners as much, and gas is saved!
